A professor at Comillas ICAI participates in an international study on the cooperation between cell receptors of the immune system

Mario Castro

The receptors of the cells of the immune system cooperate with each other to amplify the capacity for detection and to avoid auto-immune responses. This is, at least, one of the conclusions drawn from a study published in the journal Nature, in which Mario Castro, Professor of Comillas ICAI, has participated.

With the help of a developed mathematical model, Castro and the rest of his colleagues have demonstrated the existence of a "window of opportunity", so that immune cells can detect a threat proportionally, strong enough to be effective, but weak enough so as not to activate in a way that is harmful to the body itself.

Participating in the study were scientists from seven institutions, including the Universidad Pontificia Comillas, from four European countries.
